Shop tour
Here is a tour of my shop. At present a single car garage space crammed with tools and little space to move around. All heavy tools are on wheels so that I can move things in and out.

I have built several forges. Every time trying to make some improvements on the previous design. My current forge is based on atmospheric burners by Rex Price. The forge is contained in steel pipe and has 2 layers of insulating blanket coated with high temp refractory mortar. The floor is a castable refractory to resist flux.

I use a flywheel press for precise forging and a hydraulic press to break down stock, consolidate steel blooms and forge-welding.

The quench tank is also on wheels and lined up with a shower pan for waterproofing. I use mostly water as a quenchant.

I have been very pleased with this Bader III grinder. It gets a lot of use around here.

Many things have changed since I took the original pictures for this page. As of April 2008 this is how one side of the shop looks now. The room has been populated with tables and more stuff. I am maximizing the available space in the garage but that requires moving things around into different configurations for different tasks.
